The excerpt above is from an Apple job ad, spotted by Engadget, looking for a Handwriting Recognition Engineer, and mentioning the possibility that the recongition technology to be worked on may extend to the iPhone.

That would be sweet.  That is the one thing (apart from 3G) that I probably miss most in the iPhone.  I know, most people hate using a stylus and don’t usually care much for the typical handwriting recognition apps found on PDAs and smartphones.  I only want a stylus and handwriting recognition for one purpose - just to take notes, really quickly.  I don’t want to fumble around tyring to tap menus or buttons or any of that jazz - just want a faster note-taking method - and I have always been much, much quicker with letter recognizer sort of apps than with any keyboard - whether it was the Treo’s, an HTC slide-out, or the iPhone’s virtual one.

Anybody else have any use for this on the iPhone?

Well, not a lot really … is what they reveal.  Screencaps of the upcoming iPhone App Store have been popping up at lots of sites over the weekend and today.  As you can see, the one used above is from The Boy Genius Report(google these key words). Some sites seem to think they’re faked, others say there is growing evidence that they’re legit.

Either way, these don’t seem far-fetched in terms of what an App Store page might look like.  As many have noted, the pages look a lot like Installer app right now, except the Uninstall button on the bottom row is clearly missing.  This sort of layout makes sense, and certinly works well on Installer  If Apple just throw in a few prettier icons and product screencaps amongst these pages, I’ll part with my money even quicker I’m sure

What do you all think?  Will the App Store look wildly different to the screencaps we’ve seen?  Do you care much, or do we just want the damn store to open for business???

GeoPedia is a new native app for the iPhone that blends all the information contained in Wikipedia with the iPhone’s location awareness and presents you with a stream of Wikipedia articles that are relevant to where you are.

Clever idea, and it seems to work well so far - as you can see in the screencaps above, it gave me some good articles relating not just to the city of Austin as a whole, but accurate and interesting in relation to my Southwest section of the city. GeoPedia also requires zero configuration once you install it. Just launch it and it determines your location and takes you to a Safari page with your articles of local interest - I like zero config programs!

There are a number of good ways to get quick details on local restaurants and businesses - from Google Maps to specialist applications like Earthcomber - but none that can provide the sort of comprehensive and historical overview that access to Wikipedia provides.

“We believe Flash is synonymous with the Internet experience, and we are committed to bringing Flash to the iPhone,” he said. “We have evaluated (the software developer tools) and we think we can develop an iPhone Flash   player ourselves.”

That’s Adobe’s CEO - Shantanu Narayen - during an investors conference call on Tuesday.  Apparently the SDK has given Adobe the tools they need, and they’ve made a start on this.

They are hoping to deliver Flash for iPhone via the App Store, when it goes live this summer.

There are still plenty of questions about whether a Flash player can be made to work within all the restrictions Apple is set to enforce under the new 2.0 firmware, but it sure is good to hear a definite statement of intent from Adobe on this …

smartRSS is a new RSS reader for the iPhone; the second iPhone native app in this category that I’m aware of.  It’s just been released in Installer during the last day or so.

This new app has a very nice look and feel to it.  Buttons and graphics are bright and strong, article summaries are nicely laid out, and it is easy to navigate and use.

All good stuff, except for one thing.  It has no ability to import your feeds via an .opml file.  That’s a huge miss for me, and I expect for many people.  It is just way too much of a pain in the neck to manually enter long feed URLs.  Maybe when the iPhone gets copy and paste, maybe I’d work with this a little - but for now I have to say it looks great but it’s a non-starter without some sort of import capability.  Hopefully we’ll see that in an update soon.

That may be a less difficult to receive considering the 16 GB example is presently selling for $499, requires a two-year dedication to AT&T Wireless, and, unlike most every new AT&T cellphone, offers no subsidy, but when you tread backwards and believe about it, it really is. And go June a better trade will have an entire lost best. Let me explain… When we were first introduced to the iPhone to little much than a year ago we were told that Apple was introducing three original devices, a cubicle telephone, a widescreen picture iPod, and a Mobile Internet Device (MID. The hallway at MacWorld exploded with clapping when Stevo so announced that all three devices would go in an unmarried, slick package- the iPhone. Yet while the device was far from cheap, particularly at its initial premium cost, when one took each part separately it wasn’t a terrible trade either. The dislocation might get something like this– Smartphone- $99-$299 (contract cost) Memory Card- $50-$100 iPod- $149- $349 MID-$200-$500.
In new words, if you were looking to buy all three devices the LEAST costly combination would yet cost $500. So the iPhone wasn’t all that terrible a trade after all. In June, that “not a terrible trade” will have an entire plenty best. Why? Because in June the iPhone will no longer be three devices- it will be four. In June the iPhone will be the better smartphone / picture iPod / Mobile Internet Device / Handheld Gaming Device EVER!!! And when you regard that a PlayStation Portable costs $150+ and a Nintendo DS Lite costs $120, $499 for a 16GB iPhone doesn’t appear unconscionable. Expensive? Yes. Unreasonable? No. So the equation looks something like this– Super smartphone? $200 Memory for it? $75 Video iPod? $249 Mobile Internet Device? $400 Handheld Gaming Device? $150 Having them all wrapped upward in one glossy Apple merchandise? Priceless… :):)

Since the dawn of time, people have been seeking the easiest and most hassle-free way to get speed dial icons onto their iPhone home screen.  Well … or at least for the last few months or so.

And now SpringDial is here to provide the simplest method of all for getting speed dial icons, with your contacts’ pictures, onto your home screen.  There have been several clever workarounds and solutions for this up to now, but none that I’ve seen that’s as easy to use as SpringDial.  Here’s how it works:

• Launch SpingDial
• Scroll through your contacts and tap on one you want to add to your home screen
• Adjust the name via a text-box if you need to, or leave it as is and hit Create

That’s it.  If you have a picture attached to the contact, it will be used for the home screen icon.  If you don’t, it uses its own sort of goofy icon, so maybe worth changing that program icon.

Deleting entries you no longer need is also easily done within the program (though you cannot delete them directly on the home screen like webclips and program icons).
